Omer Sargento leader of the Democratic Alternative and outgoing Leader of the majority resigned on election night after failing to win another majority mandate. The leader of the National Assembly of Independents resigned one month after the election and Albano Peres became leader on 22 February 2016 following a leadership campaign. Tristão Prova leader of the New Socialist Option announced that he would not be running in the 2019 election and was replaced by Meritxell Capela on 16 April 2017. Balbina Palmeira of the League of Progressive Forces was challenged from her leadership position and was replaced by Elianne Arciveiro on 23 June 2019.

On 12 October 2017, Luane Patos of the Democratic Alternative resigned which prompted a by-election in the constituency of Esperança–Trindade–Santa Fé which was won by the We Andorinheans Party. On 27 May 2019, Marinho Pedras also of the Democratic Alternative resigned within the time-frame which, under the electoral law, does not warrant a by-election and thus the seat was left vacant until the election.

The political party Unity of the Cross was formed on 6 August 2017 with Éric Laranjeiras as its leader.
