Arkalarius (Arkian: Arkeland), officially the Arkian Empire or Empire of Arkalarius (Arkian: Arkes Reich), is a country located in west Novaris. It borders Karolingia to the East, Durakia through Riesigfelsen, and shares maritime borders with Durakia, Nordenpunto, Varleuteiche, Veria, and Cryria. Covering an area of 2,059,878.512 square kilometers, it lies mostly on the Arkian Peninsula, sitting next to the Pacific Ocean, it lies between the Arkian Sea to the north and the Arkian Channel to the south.

Various groups and tribes have inhabited modern day Arkalarius ever since sentient species crossed over the landbridge from Yasteria. For a time, most of modern day Arkalarius was controlled by Tretrid under the name of Tretridian West Novaris. With the colonial ventures of Norgsveldet, Asendavia, and later Ethalria, colonial Arkalarius became a culturally diverse trading haven, which resulted in a unique regional culture, commonly cited as a key cause behind the Arkian Revolutionary War. Before the federation that fought in the Revolutionary War formed, the Arkian peninsula was a diverse mix of colonial holdings and charters, all made up of hundreds of smaller noble states. These states persist still, giving Arkalarius its unique confederal makeup. Post Arkian independence, the nation saw gradual support for democracy, and upon the death of the first and only King of Arkalarius, Johann von Freyaelv, the heir to the throne Johann II von Freyaelv abdicated in favor of a democracy, later being elected as the nation's second President. As the newly democratic Confederation of Arkalarius rose in power, it quickly came into conflict with the dominant power in Novaris, the Kingdom of Tretrid. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries Arkalarius and Tretrid would enter a series of conflicts, and although no true decisive winner was found, Arkalarius steadily grew in size and power, eventually annexing the formerly Tretridian territory of Schlesia in the final Tretrido-Arkian war. Arkalarius joined the Great War on the side of Asendavia, and throughout the conflict anti-Tretridian sentiment grew to a point even higher than in the series of 19th century conflicts between the two nations. The Great War ended with no decisive winner, and although it took some time for Arkian troops to leave Tretridian soil, there was no further escalation until the Tretrido-Arkian Cold War (henceforth "Cold War"). The Cold War was a major political conflict between Arkalarius and Tretrid, one which only escalated further as both nations expanded their influence and political power. Eventually, this resulted in a nuclear arms race. The Cold War is commonly agreed to have ended in Tretridian favor in 2002, when the Arkian Civil War broke out. After the three-year conflict of the Civil War, Arkalarius became a constitutional monarchy, and received its first monarch since the Revolutionary War.

Today, Arkalarius is a Confederal Constitutional Elective Monarchy led by a emperor or empress, who serves as the head of the Imperial Diet, which itself is populated by the leaders of the many states and nations that make up the Empire. The capital and largest city is Freyaelv, and its financial centers are Alstradt and Norstad.

Arkalarius is a rising regional power with a fairly strong economy, although it is still recovering from the Arkian economic depressed sparked by the Civil War. It is heavily developed and industrialized, and is a large producer of machinery, electronics, and automobiles. Arkalarius has a significant farming scene in the southeast area of the country, and a large portion of grain and food exports go directly to Durakia. Boasting a high standard of living, Arkalarius is known for its landscape and cities, and is one of the largest tourist destinations on Novaris.

History

Pre-Colonial

Prior to colonization and development by foreign powers, the Arkian Peninsula and the surrounding territories were home to diverse tribes of humans and dwarves. Unfortunately, the undoubtedly rich history of these peoples have been lost due to their complete displacement and eventually extinction at the hands of Tretridian colonizers. Not much is know about the way of life or societies that these tribes had, but most of them were settled as opposed to being nomadic. Tretridian accounts as well as archeological evidence show that they developed technology at a similar rate to the rest of Novaris, but did not seem to use the feudal system common at the time.

The Arkian Empire is not one nation, more so a centralized confederation of hundreds of smaller states, each led by a noble house or elected leader. When the Ethalrian crown began granting noble titles to those who arrived in Arkalarius and contributed to the colonies the population exploded, and with this increased migration came Ethalrian nobility as well. The colonies were split into thousands of fiefdoms, and only through a very complicated confederal system were they united in 1750.

Language

The vast majority of peoples in Arkalarius speak Arkian Ethalrian, often shortened to Arkian, not to be confused with the Arkian demonym. This dialect is noticably different from Standard Ethalrian, but both can still be easily understood by speakers of the other dialect.
