The Independent City State of Oceansend (simply known as Oceansend) is an independent country located in Aurora. It is surrounded by the Azure Sea to the east and shares its only land border with Axdel to the north, west and south. With a land area of approximately 17,000km² (6,500 miles ²), it is the fourth smallest sovereign state in Aurora.
During the Auroran-Pacific War, Lord Mayor Jeymi Vorlynovich attended the Sani Bursil Summit alongside Grand Duke Jeymian Drachenberg of Dragonia however it remained officially neutral during the conflict. Despite overtures by the Oan Isles to join the Auroran Union, it opted remain in the Auroran Continental Assembly despite the fact it was moribund at that point. Following the end of the war, Lord Mayor Vorlynovich represented Oceansend alongside the Dragonian Crown Prince, Jeymz Drachenberg at the Auroran Reunification Summit. Upon ratifying the Charter of the UNAC on 19 June 2018, it became one of its founding member states. Oceansend participated in 14th edition of Urthvision in 2020.
Its political system takes place in the framework of a semi-constitutional monarchy and representative democracy under the Lord Mayor, currently Jeymi Vorlynovich. Its population of approximately 37,000 uses Staynish (the official language) as the primary means of communication but a small portion of people are fluent in Axdelian. It is a founding member state of the United Nations of the Auroran Continent, the Kirib Monetary Union and it serves as the host nation of the Auroran Security Agency. Oceansend is exempt from the free travel arrangements of the UNAC to enable it to carefully control and monitor its population due to its small geographic area.
Although it does not maintain a military and relies on its neighbours for protection, it maintains a substantial foreign aid program. Its closest ally is Dragonia whose royal family is related to the Royal family of Oceansend. Although it has the second smallest economy in Aurora (approximately 5 billion KRB), its GDP per capita of approximately 143,000 KRB makes it the second richest nation on the continent after Blueacia and it is known for its offshore financial services, tourism and renewable energy industry.
History
Oceansend was founded in 720 BCE by merchants from Kveshi. The Kveshi were taken over by the Suvolic Empire. A number of those on the Suvolic Empire's noble council opted for independence rather than fealty to the usurper King, with nobilities and fiefdoms like Orkhalits'a around lake Orts'ilovi, the mercantile citystate of Oceansend on the Kormistazic peninsula, and a number of Ethaln principalities and nobilities defecting to the Krösnauen Empire.
Geography
The highest point in the country is a narrow pathway named Chemin to the top of Mount Adriel, which is 525 meters (1,722 feet) above sea level. Mount Adriel belongs to a string of large mountains that completely surrounds Oceansend, cutting the country off from its’ neighbors. There is only two points of access to the country via land along the coast, and that is with the Democratic States of Axdel. The city of Oceansend itself stretches itself along the coastline; covering approximately 4.4 km (2.7 mi), and a width that varies between 1.1 and 1.9 km (0.7 and 1.2 mi).
Farmlands, vineyards and protected light forests make up the rest of the country’s land. It is an idyllic setting with many brooks and streams coming down from the northern mountains. Oceansend’s most populous Quarter is Monte Carlo and the most populous Ward is Lavottio. Through land reclamation, Oceansend’s land mass has expanded by twenty percent.
Politics
Oceansend is governed under a form of constitutional monarchy, with Lord-Mayor as head of state. Although Lord-Mayor Jeymi is a constitutional monarch, he wields immense political power. The House of Vorlynovich has ruled Oceansend, with brief interruptions, since 1297. The official language is Staynish, Dragonian is widely spoken and understood as well as various other languages of the region. The state's sovereignty was officially recognized by the Oceansend-Dragonia Treaty of 1861, with Oceansend becoming a full Auroran Continental Assembly (ACA) voting member in 1976. It became a founding member of the United Nations of the Auroran Continent upon the dissolution of the ACA in June 2018. Despite Oceansend's independence and separate foreign policy, its defense is the responsibility of the Grand Duchy of Dragonia. However, Oceansend does maintain two small military units. A navy (which acts more like a coast guard) and an army (which acts more like a marine unit).
Economy
Economic development was spurred in the late 19th century with the opening of the country's first casino, Monte Carlo, and a railway connection to Andel, Axdel. Since then, Oceansend's mild climate, scenery, and gambling facilities have contributed to the states’ status as a tourist destination and recreation center for the rich. In more recent years, Oceansend has become a major banking center and has sought to diversify its economy into services and small, high-value-added, non-polluting industries. The state has no income tax, low business taxes, and is well known for being a tax haven. It is also the host of the annual street circuit motor race Oceansend Grand Prix, one of the original Grands Prix of Formula One.
Oceansend was formerly part of the ACA, and it participated in ACA policies, including customs and border controls. These were carried over to the UNAC in 2018. Prior to the 1861 Treaty with Dragonia, Oceansend used the Sendi as its monetary unit. After the Treaty the nation moved to the Galleon for its currency. With Oceansend ascending to the ACA, it fully embraced the Kirib. Oceansend is known as a playground for the rich and famous, due to its laws facilitating tax evasion. In 2014, it was noted about 30% of the population was made up of millionaires.
