Valeria, formerly officially entitled (and still commonly known) as South Staynes is one of four constituent countries within Great Morstaybishlia. It exists in central Aurora bordering (from left to right); Axdel, Staynes, Valerica, Rosalica, Durentrus and Asilica. Valeria recorded a population of 166.38 million people in its 2019 census. It's capital city is Kirdintayos. The nation is best known for the Zycannes, the semi-arid Sperran Desert and its cold, jagged coastline.

Following the Auroran Imperial War in 1975, Valeria declared itself an independence sovereign state from Morstaybishlia. The nation was ruled by Greta Vardem until her assassination in 1977. The same year the country signed a political union with the United Kingdom of Morstaybishlia to form the United Kingdom of Great Morstaybishlia.

Income inequality

Valeria has always suffered with greater income disparity compared to the other three constituent countries of Great Morstaybishlia. In 2016, about 16 percent of the population were under the national average. A system integration program was established in 2005 to try and sway more people to move to urbanised areas and live above or at minimum wage according to UNAC standards. However, this has only resulted in a small percentage of change.

History

Ancient

Valeria had been inhabited by a native sentient species of elf long before the arrival of early anatomically modern humans. Humans lived among Usprian elves from as early as 10,000 BCE and arrived from primarily the Ethalns but also around the mountain passage in modern day Valerica. After the invention of agriculture, tribes bore the most resemblance to those from the Ethalns but began their own identity as early as 500 BCE. Tribes that later developed into small kingdoms were typically of mixed species, though it is evident that they rarely interbred.

Medieval

The Kingdom of Valeria rose to power in the 7th century. It was a dominion of elf and man, and which started from the unification of Valerian city states. Valerica rose to a preposterous size in the space of half a millennium and competed with the Ethalried Empire and Kormistazic Empire for resources. In the 13th century, following a series of conquests by the Staynish in 1216 and 1256, who had traveled through passages in the Zycannes, a feat never before thought possible; the Kingdom of Valeria collapsed and the land came under Staynish rule. The first conquest took control of Aegis (then Ǽga), the former capital and the second conquest took control of Valeron.

The collapse of the Kingdom of Valeria left a large power void in southern Aurora and a mass migration event south to modern day Valerica to avoid strict language and cultural assimilation. Other smaller kingdoms benefited from this power void.

Early-modern era

Valeria (then as Staynes) became one of the earliest regions in Aurora to begin the Industrial Revolution, and as jobs became increasingly in demand in high density urban areas, a large urbanisation event occurred. Some cities today are direct results of the Industrial Revolution, including the nations capital, Kirdintayos.

Late-modern era

When the Great War broke out, Valeria became one of the larger theatres of war in Aurora. It was hit hard with economic depression in the later stages of the war and post-war, where political revolutionaries attempted to fight for independence, but failed. When King Thadeus II gave over his right to absolutism, Valeria was administered as a territory rather than a constituent country within Morstaybishlia until 60 years later.

At the breakout of the Auroran Imperial War, Valeria became the first theatre of war, with the Ethalrian Empire and Norograd attempting to cut Morstaybishlian control over southern Aurora before they could fully mobilise. The South Staynish managed to defeat the Ethalrians at key battles on home territory, including the Battle of Yikara and the Battle of the Sands. Following the end of the war, Greta Vardem, a South Staynish advocate for political rights held a snap referendum which saw the people vote to secede from the Empire. The referendum was later seen as illegal, but nonetheless Greta Vardem became the first President of Valeria, though with little to no international recognition. When Vardem was assassinated in 1977, the nation collapsed into a bloody civil war and later reintegrated with Morstaybishlia in 1977 as a constituent country to form the Kingdom of Great Morstaybishlia.
