The Royal Armed Forces of Nagato (RAFN), also known as the Nagatoian Armed Forces (NAF) are the military services responsible for the defense and protection of Nagato. The RAFN is the world’s seventeenth-largest Armed Forces, with a total of 1.425 million personnel including reserves (4% of the total population). It is the fifth fastest-growing and modernizing military force in the world, with substantial defense and global power projection capabilities. In the past decade, it has been rapidly developing and commissioning new arsenals, with numerous technological advancements and breakthroughs. Today, the RAFN is the dominant force protecting the contentious Sea of Gondwana and the Commonwealth of Unovian Nations.

Since the formation of the RAFN in 1700, the Armed Forces haven’t seen a lot of action until the Nagatoian Civil War between the Duchy of Nagato and the Imperial State of Nagato. During the war, the armed forces were split fighting for each side. The Duchy of Nagato had the majority of the Navy and the Marines, while the Imperial State of Nagato had the majority of the Army and the Air Force. Along with being able to control the waters around the two nations, the Duchy of Nagato defeated the Imperial State of Nagato and annexed it to form the Grand Duchy of Nagato. The Armed Forces were reorganized as the Royal Armed Forces of Nagato and now have established themselves as Gondwana’s leading military and economic power.

Today, the Nagatoian Armed Forces consist of: the Nagatoian Air Force, a technologically sophisticated air force with a diverse operational fleet consisting of both fixed-wing and rotary aircraft; the Nagatoian Army, an up and coming specialized amphibious infantry force; the Nagatoian Coast Guard, a highly specialized maritime security, search and rescue, and law enforcement service branch with a fleet of 126 commissioned ships; the Nagatoian Marines, a highly specialized amphibious light infantry force; the Nagatoian Navy, a blue-water navy with a fleet of 217 commissioned ships; and the Emerald Royal Guard, the personal guard of the Nagatoian Royal Family and Foreign Dignitaries.

The Commander-in-chief of the Nagatoian Armed Forces is the Nagatoian Grand Duke, Daniel, to whom members of the forces swear allegiance. The Nagatoian National Council approves the continued existence of the armed forces by passing an Armed Forces Act at least once every ten years, per required by the Bill of Rights 1700. The armed forces are managed by the Ministry of Defence, headed by the Secretary of Defence.
