The Federal Commonwealth of Emberwood Coast, typically called Emberwood Coast (ˈem:bər:wo͝od kōst), is a nation on the northeastern coast of the Auroran Continent. It has land borders with the Federation of Axdel (including Lyrevale and Korstazia) to the east and Nyerr to the south. Its capitol (and largest city) is Aura, which is home to almost 43 million people. The country is highly industrialized, featuring a robust research sector as well as a relatively advanced Space Administration. The large lake in the southwest, Mapleleaf Lake, is home to a vast array of temperate wildlife. Most of the nation is cooler due to the nation's low latitude, and oceanic currents often develop multi-day long rainstorms over the capital city, Aura. The city is home to the headquarters of the United Nations of the Auroran Continent.
Modern day Emberwood Coast was originally settled by a mix of small uspalrian and Human villages in the early 7000s BCE. As civilization of the continent progressed, marginalized groups and exiles coalesced into a loose alliance by the second century BCE. In 122 CE, after refocusing their armies Kormistazic forces took Aurelia, the largest of several communities in the area. Later, however, collapse of Kormistazm and eruption of Mount Koriba in 512CE allowed the region to develop independently once more, now with significantly more advanced technology from under Kormistazic rule. The area remained independent until the early 8th century, when the Second Kormastazic Empire reconquered the area and held it until 1575, when it was officially ceded to the Morstaybishlian Empire. Up to this point, it had primarily remained agrarian, sending food east towards Kormastazm but remaining otherwise underdeveloped. Morst rule brought modernized cities and greatly expanded maritime infrastructure, leading to rapid technological and cultural growth, as well as the development of a regional identity. A brief anarchist revolt just before and during the outbreak of war in 1904 initially seemed fruitless, but laid the groundwork for the eventual formation of Emberwood Coast after a broader leftist coalition fought for and won independence from Morst rule in 1970.
Emberwood Coast is governed by a mix of volunteer and elected council officials, with a devolutionary model leaving decisions to local and regional groups whenever possible. The highest office, the Federal Council, is an elected body of 7 leaders, selected by a general population vote. The Federal Assembly, the nation's legislative body, consists of two elected bodies, the Assembly of Councilors: a bill-writing body that authors most of the nation's new bills; and the Assembly of Commons, a larger assembly dedicated to the debate and ratification of bills passed by members of the Assembly of Councilors. Overseeing each Assembly is a Representative Speaker, a single representative elected by the members of their respective assembly. Balancing the executive and legislative bodies is a system of courts, headed by the High Court: a bench of 7 judges who interpret legal challenges and escalated court disputes from lower courts.
Since the early 20th century, Emberwood Coast has been a hub for transcontinental trade and international finance, serving as an early anchor for Auroran manufacturing and research through the turn of the millenium. As the 21st century approached, large-scale manufacturing (particularly electronics) overtook shipbuilding as the nation's primary industry. The country is also home to the world's largest cooperative sector, and the city of Aura is home to over 4,000 independent residential cooperatives. As of 2022, the nation's unemployment rate is the third lowest in the UNAC, and its poverty rate is the second lowest in the UNAC.
Etymology and Vexillology
Emberwood
A. aurum is a species of maple tree in the Acer genus, which is native to the coastal midlands of the Mapplethorpe valley and west of the Auric Mountains. The tree sports dark golden to burgundy leaves which lighten in the fall to a bright yellow which lends itself to many Emberitian symbols. As it grows almost exclusively within the borders of modern day Emberwood Coast, it operated as one symbol of cultural identity during the occupations of the Kormastizic and later Morstaybishlian Empires. It first saw use as a name in the spring of 1970 with the initial independence declaration from Morstaybishlia in connection with Norograd, when the breakaway principality was renamed from Westmoore to Ember Valley. When revolutionary leadership voted to further secede as a full nation from the Noroist Republic, it became known as Emberwood Coast.
Flag Designs and Revolutionary Iconography
Lotus Flag
The initial revolutionary flag sported a lotus emblem, as well as stars for the constituent provinces of the governorship. The original designer is not known, but the symbol hails from an infamous televised address of Aura Precinct Chief William C. Watson, responsible for violent crackdowns on protests and demonstrations in the late 1960s. In a news conference on July 5th, 1968 he said of the protesters, "This must end. No movement of freaks and regressives can, or will, succeed while I am in control of this city. The residents of this city must be protected from this antisocial movements at all costs." In the background of the broadcast, a lone protestor can be seen with a small cardboard sign with text reading "We Could All Use A Little Sin" ringing a stylized lotus flower reminiscent of this initial design.
Modern Flag
Main Article: 2019 Flag Referendum
In 2019 a political realignment was accompanied by a democratically flag redesign that saw a departure from the lotus symbol and an embrace of triple bar imagery as syndicalist groups retook government for the first time in two decades. The current design is credited to Cilantro Ilermayill, a professor at Kaleidoscope University. A public vote amongst the school nominated it to a second round for a general vote, where it won with 41% of the overall vote. A final runoff of this and the runner up flag saw it selected with 69% of the total vote. It was officially inducted as part of the "Federal Redevelopment Act" in a ceremony at Memorial Park on December 15th, 2019.

Early Settlements and Agriculture
The first recorded evidence of sentient habitation is traced to Stone Age dark-skinned humans from central Aurora who are the ancestors of today's Native Emberitians. Archaeological digs dating to the mid-6000s BCE indicate they lived in small, nomadic, and pastoral tribes and spread over the northwestern coast of the peninsula and the forested highlands to the south. As Western-Auroran cavan settlement consolidated around the city states of Laqytia, these nomadic peoples were constrained towards the northern coast, limiting their spread to the northwest coast of the western peninsula. Semi-permanent settlements existed in a novel format, cultivating semi-organized fields of grains that were shared between traveling groups in an arrangement that still exists (albeit in a more motorized format) in current day Aurora as the Nyerrian peoples. Civilization was, at least until the 6th century CE, limited to small villages. The most advanced of these utilized bronze tools, and sparse steel implements from more advanced empires that had filtered through the mountains separating the coastal highlands from the Lyr Valley. By the 7th century BCE, these groups had unified into a loose coalition under the name "Aronia".
Cultural Expansion
As other human civilizations expanded across the continent, other species including uspalrians and vulpines were forced from their lands as ethnic human empires began to solidify to the east. These ethnic groups settled and intermingled with the semi-nomadic cultures to form more permanent cities. Irrigated farms and contemporary aqueducts helped support larger settlements, spurring a further population boom. This boom was further compounded after the expanding Kormistazic empire suffered defeats to Solto and Teban armies. This, coupled with decline of established empires allowed for steady growth of local city-states, the strongest of which was the city of Aurelia near modern day Aymes around the early 2nd century BCE. In the 2nd century CE, the Kormistazic empire began to encroach on Aronian land, seeing its potential value as a new province. The few existing cities formed small armies to counter imperial incursions, and resisted being conquered by the Kormistazic for over a century. Due to resistance by the Soltics and other unruly satellite civilisations, the Kormistazic were unable to devote enough resources to conquering the Aronian at the time. However, in the 1st century CE, the Kormistazic defeated these civilizations including the Aronians. Continued raids by Kormistazic forces slowly eroded the city's infrastructure and military strength until, in 122 CE, it was conquered. Further campaigns brought the remainder of the region, save for a few small towns, into Kormistazm rule.
Democracy and Emberitian Identity
Later, however, the collapse of Kormistazm and eruption of Mount Tore in 512CE allowed the region to develop independently once more, now with significantly more advanced technology from under Kormistazic rule. The region's unique geography lent itself to a somewhat reduced impact from the disaster, helping the area "catch up" in technological development with its larger neighbors. Valerian refugees brought further new technologies including the compass, spinning wheel, and carding machines; as well as leading to advancements like wood-pulp paper in 611CE, and wind-powered grain mills in the late 770s CE. These discoveries coupled with advancements in steelworking, archery, and military science allowed the alliance to remain free of outside rule nearly until the end of the millennium. With that time, small but growing cities along the Cenerian Coast were establishing identities as centers of refugee and immigrant life, leading to extensive democratic structures and forestalling inroads of capitalism significantly. Worker's councils oversaw production of grain and steel, construction and maintenance of infrastructure, even staffing and administration of a contemporarily advanced public education network. This lead to the largest of the cities in that age, Vale (modern day Kaleidoscope), having a population in excess of 100,000 people in 804CE. In total, the current land area of Emberwood Coast was estimated to be home to over 300,000 people in the year 800 CE, almost a full third of which having genealogies originating outside the region or continent. In 913, however, the militaristic and expansionist second Kormistazic Empire made significant inroads into the region. Numerous battles slowed but failed to stop this advance, leading to the reconquest of the area and it's settlement by Kormistazic nationals. In 942, Veridia (modern-day Aura) was founded as a trade port to receive luxury imports from Kormistazic trade partners in Arcturia. In part due to this investment in a new trade hub, only partial post-war reconstruction of the region took place, leading to abandonment of some antiquity settlements (including Aurelia, Birdsong, and Imi). Depopulation of highland areas in particular lead to a resurgence of agrarian and pastoral lifestyles, later capitalized upon by Kormastazic leadership in the form of grain quotas and mandatory exports in order to fuel its eastern expansion. While this did strengthen the military efforts in campaigns against powers like Staynicca, it severely reduced quality of life in the Aronian province. Cavan settlers from Kormistazic territory occasionally evicted and killed human, vekaiyun and uspalrian farmers with the help of local forces. Strained imperial forces held the Aronian land despite efforts of democratic agitators and independence movements until the late 10th century, when weakening central leadership allowed for the organization of a number of underground organizations as well as the further development of proto-syndicalist ideology. Kormistazic rule was never fully broken, however, and the reformation of the country as the Third Kormistazic Empire only further solidified the authoritarian policies enacted on the land.
Conscription was common for the residents of the region, as Kormistazm turned its eyes to colonialization and conquest. Population in the Aronian province fell by nearly a quarter due to famines, foreign conflict, and displacement. Further Kormastazic conquest in Arcturia necessitated development of Aris (modern day Rockport) as a contemporary maritime hub in 1190. The first real imperial investment in the Aronian province, it was receiving cargo by 1228, and building ships by the end of the 13th century, helping to enable something of a golden age in the empire. This was short lived, however, as a plague outbreak in the early 14th century stunted growth of the Third Empire. Subsequent effects of this decrease in productive and economic output landed the Morstaybishlian Empire far ahead in development, setting the stage for the Morst invasion of Kormastazm two centuries later.
Morst Development Era
In 1575, after more than 50 years of war, the Third Kormistazic Empire fell to Morstaybishlia. Aronia was redubbed "Ember Valley". Treatment of what was now Ember Valley moderately improved over Kormistazic rule, though this was primarily as a result of technological advancement as opposed to any mandate from imperial leadership. The next two centuries primarily saw development and modernization of agricultural zones left over from both independent and Kormistazic development, but in 1872 the South Aura Shipyard broke ground as part of a maritime shipping expansion mandate. Strain on food supply lead to development of overseas agricultural colonies in Arcturia, necessitating a convenient port for overland transfer towards inland Aurora. Food, naval arms, guns, and notably, slaves, all found their way through Aura and west towards the heart of Morst land on a regular basis. The city grew rapidly and attracted many immigrants, particularly racial and special minorities who invariably found low-paid work as deckhands, porters, and laborers at warehouses and dry-docks. As in generations before, this further diversified the demographic milieu and began to generate political radicals in earnest. In 1855 a series of anarchist-affiliated bombings on statues and provincial government buildings spurred military intervention and a further crackdown on intellectual institutions; however further industrialization and the now readily available printing press made stopping the ideas, if not the operatives, of anarchist and communist thought next to impossible this far from the seat of imperial power. Railroad lines, by contrast, began to make inroads towards the coast and in 1861 the first cross-mountain line completed a route from Aura to Andel. This somewhat alleviated the difficulties imperial authorities had in policing the governance, but did not cure the central problem for the sprawling empire: manpower. The Factory Act, a Morst law passed in 1869, initially spurred new investment in Emberitian factories but quickly became moot as industrial demand climbed anyway due to the increasing quality of life and luxury goods expected in the imperial core of Staynes and Cathalrus. These exports and growing naval demand for ships-of-the-line to meet the increasing demands of the Morst Admiralty came to a head when in the fall of 1904 the first shots of the Great War were fired.
The first two decades of the 20th century saw over 41,000 conscripted men from Ember Valley die in combat as part of offensives by the Imperial Powers. Of the nearly 50,000 who returned, nearly half were severely wounded, and they returned to a governorship that had lost an estimated 140,000 civilians to food and medicine shortages between 1905 and 1917. The halt of the slave trade, while obviously widely accepted as a positive, had unintended consequences; the combination of freed peoples who were suddenly released in the province as well as the returning veterans of the war strained an already threadbare supply chain almost to the breaking point. Discoveries in fertilizer, refrigeration, and chemical pesticides helped prevent full-scale famine but were unsuccessful in holding unrest at bay. The late 1920s and early 1930s featured the Morst "War on Slavery", necessitating the expansion of shipyards at Aura and the development of a new city, Portside, to accommodate the fleet expansion for the Cerenarian and Concordian Oceans.
Anti-Authoritarianism and Modern Revolution
Main Articles: Emberitian Revolution Work programs helped alleviate direct action and terrorism somewhat, but had an inverse effect on regular workers, and again, radical theory spread like wildfire in the close working environments of ship's hulls and high-rise skeletons. By 1940, political violence in Axdel had begun to spill over into Noroist violence in some small Emberitian towns, and police militarization began sharply increasing. Lone ceremonial guards around government buildings were replaced with IFVs and body-armored troops, yet by 1957 there were scant months that passed without a separatist demonstration or attack. Notably, all but two bombings managed to avoid civilian injury.
The onset of the late 20th century brought the anti-imperial sentiments of rock music, recreational substance use, and a new explosion of leftist ideologies from both inside and outside the empire. This proved to be the final straw for the independence movement, and on January 19th, 1970, an assault on the Bayside District Armory netted the Free Land Alliance over 3,000 long guns, three armored fighting vehicles, and numerous pieces of body armor and other equipment. This marked the first shots fired in the Emberitian Revolutionary Movement, and prompted a violent (if limited) response from imperial authorities. February 1st and 26th each saw heavy fighting in Aura and Rockport, particularly the latter date which saw the seizure of the MBS Victory as well as three destroyers that founded the backbone of the resistance's nascent maritime force. Following a skirmish with two Morst cruisers, the Victory suffered severe hull damage that left her beached on the east beach of Aura. Rather than attempt to repair the hull damage, anarchist fighters opted to reinforce the seaward-facing side of the ship and build around it, forming the first 250 meters of the Aura Bastion Emplacements.
Post-Revolutionary Organization
Modern Emberwood is a breakaway Noroist republic of Noroist Axdel (which itself was a breakaway from the Morstaybishlian Empire) that gained independence in the Auroran Imperial War. As the bloody fight for independence was being waged on the outskirts of the administrative region, numerous rock songs spurred the coastal population to action. In April of 1970, rebel leaders became signatory to the Norogradian secession and officially joined the Ribenstadt Pact. Subsequent development of more organized military forces helped Noroist forces seize further Morst naval assets, and secured multiple trade routes for Ribenstadt Pact forces. These victories, coupled with a narrow victory by an Axdelian fleet off the coast of Rockport allowed Arcturian ships to circumvent the Staynish embargo and relieve the brutal food shortages in Western and Southwestern Aurora. In August 1971, a meeting of revolutionary leaders was held to organize a territorial government for the newly liberated territory. Out of this meeting rose a democratic government and the existence of Emberwood Coast as a sovereign nation. Chance Syng was elected president on January 9th, 1972.
The "War Committee" voted to leave the union of Noroist Republics in the winter of 1973, citing that the war doctrine for the Ribenstadt Pact had trended dangerously towards weapons of mass destruction and deployment of nuclear arms. Chance Syng was the president for eight years, ending their two term presidency on January 8th, 1980. Just weeks earlier, in late 1979, Kayla Hansleigh was elected to take their place as president of the Coast. Amid the turmoil of finger pointing and political investigations, along with accusations of further ongoing antagonisation towards the Staynish Bl foreign aid drops the nation could almost have been said to have been isolationist. Hansleigh was president for three terms, ending in 1992.
Economic Development Era
Hansleigh's main focus was Scientific Advancement. In 1991 she organized the Emberwood Coast Space Exploration Administration (ECSEA). Buoyed by assistance from UCCS aerospace investment, the program flourished, landing contractors in Portside and Kaleidoscope a combined $SHD 16.7 billion in development grants. Later that decade, the ESV Arrow was completed, and launched into orbit on February 29th, 1998. After the end of Hansleigh's second term, Darson Nanokono was sworn into the presidency on January 7th, 1992. As a continuation of their predecessor's scientific programs, they authorized the construction of Perpetua Station. On August 7, 2005, Perpetua Station was ripped apart in a micro-meteor strike, killing all four crewmembers aboard. The nation grieves for months. The incumbent president narrowly won reelection in 2000, facing a 22-year-old Harriet Young, who rode a wave of isolationist nationalism, pushed to the forefront by the new culture of the nascent internet and other instant information services.
Nanokono personally announces the start of the Valiant-Class Orbiter program in 2006, continuing Hansleigh's push for exploration. After Nanokono's second term, President Archer was elected for a single term, running on a push for strengthened infrastructure and improvements to urban centers. Many credit this presidency starting in 2008 as propelling Aura to its current state as a global economic and political hub. Lakon Anch is elected president in 2012 with a slight majority, touting an impressive resume in the physical sciences. Pushing for improved and expanded post-secondary education, the nation became a world leader in collegiate attendance. The length of Anch's presidency was uneventful, and he stepped down after a single term to pursue research in his previous field. Nimona Poole was elected president in 2016, on a platform of international cooperation and an increase in "cultural relevance" for Emberwood Coast.
The next several years began a downward trend into conflict. As numerous new nations rose to international power, Poole found herself trapped in networks of treatises and alliances, and the Emberwood Coast Armed Forces were deployed in several battles; critics cited the Foratemerian incident, Battle of Tival, the Four Days War, as evidence of the mounting misuse of the nation's defensive forces.
Finally, as 2017 came, the Treaty of Aura went into effect. Still wishing to maintain neutrality in the numerous growing political fissures on Urth, Poole began to forge new agreements with other nations, in an attempt to forestall further war. The then-president regained some of her lost public opinion on a platform of peace and non-aggression, and expressed hopes to forestall further conflict going forward at a meeting in Bursil after the foundation of the new United Nations of the Auroran Continent. Many speculated on whether she would run for a second term in 2020 amid the growing division amongst the electorate. Isolationist candidates, including then Councilor-Chambermember Harriet Young, saw a moderate surge in popularity, particularly amidst negative media coverage of military actions overseas.
Radicalization and Socialist Policy
A constitutional crisis emerged in 2019, when external actors attempted to destabilize the republic by targeting then-president, Nimona Poole. A right-wing coalition, lead by vice-president Harriet Young moved to seize the presidency by filling her seat, but a popular vote after a move by the Free Associate Coalition blocked the attempt by reorganizing the government. This move blocked conservative policy changes to the country's economy and international relations. Saravalie Interva, who led the Free Associate Coalition's push, currently sits as the international "Councilmember of State" on the Federal Council.
The shift to a syndicalist government strained relations with other more conservative governments, and combined with the death of the former head of state caused relations with Great Morstaybishlia and some Axdelian officials to degrade. Compounding this, a minor economic crisis in west Aurora triggered a slowing of regional trade and necessitated almost two full years to trade re-negotiations in both regional and international forums.
Politics and Government
The government of the Coast was reorganized in 2019 to a national referendum, called by a vote in the Chamber of Commons.
Administrative Councils
The national Executive division is composed of thousands of people, organized in specific work groups, each reporting up to more general meetings until the oversight council. These are elected via single-transferable vote through different blocs (one nationally, six by general vote for specific geographic regions, and five by limited relevant vote through different industries). Each can be removed after a vote of no-confidence after a petition by any citizens of Emberwood Coast.
Election day is December 7th, and is a national holiday.

Urban Centers
Aura
Main article: Aura
Aura, the capital of Emberwood Coast, is home to a vast majority of the national population. It is by far the densest population center in the area.
It is home to the nation's Administration Center, as well as the Arbiter Council and the Free Assembly Center.
Right in the center of the city is Arcadia Bay, the nation's primary maritime transport center. The largest harbor in the nation, it is home to embassies of any nation the Coast has relations with, and the Executive Administration Building. Its famous Seaside Street has several open plots still open for foreign buildings. It houses the UNAC Assembly Center as well, and has hosted international talks there since 1976 CE. A bronze statue of Chance Syng, the first President of the Coast, stands strong beside other nation's heroes over the plaza of the Assembly Center, surrounded by all the flags of member nations of the assembly.
The bay is across from Altis Island, host to Stonewall Point, the ECSEA's primary launch facility.
Northern Aura is a less densely populated area of the city and favored home of many diplomats.
Portside
Main article: Portside
Portside features the majority of Emberwood's maritime establishments. While Aura has more coastline, the capital has stricter regulations on seaside development. Therefore, Portside actually has more ports, harbors, and drydocks. It also has more industry, and more commercial warehouses. Agricultural shipments coming in from the greenhouses and farms around Myriad and to the east of Portside.
The downtown area is also much less developed than Aura (Owing in part to the fact that it has only a tenth of the residents). It is frequented by naturalists and tourists.
Rockport
Main article: Rockport
The northernmost municipality in the Coast, Rockport is the home of more than five hundred thousand people. It is quaint, compared to Aura and Portside. Independent retail stores are very common, as are family-owned restaurants.
Rockport is the military headquarters of the Coast. It sports the Rockport Naval Base, as well as North Coast International Airport.
Additionally, the city is just West of the Border with Axdel, making it a hotspot for overland trade, with several warehouses, depots, and rail stations. Over a dozen mag-lev stations connect Rockport to the Axdelian Border. The city also has the nation's highest building, not to be confused with the Tallest Building. The nation's tallest structure is located in Aura, and is shorter by ten meters because of the natural elevation of the northern part of the country.

Urbanization
Emberwood Coast is divided into 5 provinces 82 rallies, each of which has a civic center, or seat of local government. The state has 110 municipalities in total. The Office of Management and Budget designates six metropolitan areas in Emberwood, one of which extends into neighboring Axdel. To limit suburban sprawl, legislation was enacted in 1979 to strictly control low density expansion of metro areas.
Aura is Emberwood Coast's capital and largest city, with over 50,000,000 residents. Its 59-rally metropolitan area has been the nation's largest since its organization in 1970 and is the fastest-growing metropolitan area in Aura, with about 2 million residents. East Aura hosts not only the nation's two chip-fabrication factories, but also Aurora's largest superconductor plant. Southern Aura is a bustling cultural center, highlighted by the Gateway Arch and Southgate Mall. Central Aura is one of the densest urban areas on Urth, featuring the historic Broken Light walk and the Twin Arcologies. Portside is home to over 8.5 million people and features the majority of Emberwood's maritime establishments. While Aura contains more coastline, the capital has stricter regulations on industrial seaside development. Therefore, Portside has more ports, harbors, and drydocks, and hosts most international trade for Emberwood. Food exports from Portside include staple crops like wheat and corn from Myriad, and orchard products from the city of Kaleidoscope. Rockport is the military headquarters of the Coast. It contains the Rockport Naval Headquarters, as well as North Coast International Airport. Additionally, the city is just west of the border with Axdel, making it a center for overland trade, with several warehouses, depots, and rail stations. Nearly a half dozen high-speed rail stations connect Rockport to the Axdelian Border.

Geography
The coasts of the nation are green, much as they once were, and teeming with life, one such species lending their likeness to the nation's animal, the fox. The entire nation, and it's claimed seas, span only a few thousand square kilometres. To the north there is the Gradean Sea, and to the South and West is the larger nation of Axdel. Due to its proximity to the sea, the nation's tallest natural point is a small chalky mesa, near the northern border, which reaches only about 298 meters at its peak.
The nation's cities are extremely dense, containing 90% of the population in less than 30% of the land. The majority live in the capital, Aura, while other dense centers exist on the mainland coast.
Despite the high urbanization, the nation has (relatively) vast swaths of protected forests throughout.

To the south and extending across the more southern nation of Quartz Fern Coast extend Fagaceae Autumnus forests, notable for their perpetual fall colors. A mutation in the chlorophyll of the leaves and geographic separation created the species, colloquially known as fireleaf or forever-fall to Emberitians. Most notable of these nicknames is Emberwood, which gave its name to the nation. Fagaceae Autumnus is Emberwood Coast's national flora.
