Aponivia [aponɪvia], or The Confederated Provinces of Aponivia, is a country between the western and central parts of Novaris. It's eight provinces and two territories extend from the Labarge Sea to the north and the ___ to the south, covering ___ square kilometres (___ square miles), making it one of the largest countries by area. It borders the nations of Ostarkeland and Schlesia to the west, and Bologia, Transnalpia, Tretrid and Lapinumbia to the east. Aponivia's capitals are Democracy Park and Lamanwasser City, and its three largest metropolitan areas are Klippezackt, Wendake and the latter capital city.

Various native people inhabited what is now Aponivia for thousands of years before colonisation. (historical summary of colonisation)

Aponivia is a confederation of parliamentary democracies, with all provincial prime ministers, who serve as the chairs of the Cabinet and the heads of government, collectively forming the country's leadership. The nation is officially multilingual at the federal level, sporting ___ official languages. It ranks among the highest in international measurements of government transparency, civil liberties, quality of life, economic freedom, and education. It is one of the world's most ethnically diverse and multicultural nations, the product of nations with varied origins and histories banding together into a single country. Aponivia's long and complex relationships with Arkalarius and Tretrid have had a significant impact on its economy and culture.

As most parts are highly developed, Aponivia sports one of the highest GDPs and HDIs in the world. Its advanced economy is the ___-largest in the world, relying chiefly upon its abundant natural resources and well-developed international and internal trade networks. Aponivia is part of several major international and intergovernmental institutions or groupings including the League of Novaris and ___.

Aponivia originates from the Early Lissian Aponivi, meaning "where the wind blows down the gap." The name originally referred to all lands between the Austra (Aponivian) and Sutem (Nalpian) mountain ranges. During ___'s reign in the Dallacquan Empire, Aponivi started appearing on maps in reference to the western mountains. Tretridian explorers regularly used Dallacquan maps, so the term Aponivian was adopted into the Tretridian language. Most tribes eventually adopted the same name for the mountain range, relegating the original term to traditional ceremonies and folklore.

The name of the confederation was picked by Lissian politician Louis Boyer in ___ when it was first being formed. When prompted by a Nordenpuntian representative, he explained his choice with the following:

“The Aponivians unite us, from Nordenpunto to Lobakroa[1]. They were sacred to the Ancients and will still be present, standing over these lands with all their might, when all that we have built turns to dust. They are a symbol of everlasting strength. Aponivia, forever.”

The end of Boyer's quote is now used at the country's motto.

1.^ Though Lobakroa is no longer the most southern province and Nordenpunto is no longer the most northern, they were at the time.
