Æthelwine Heardsunu is a Tretridian politician and diplomat who is one of the Deputy Secretary-Generals of the League of Novaris, is Chairman of the LN Foreign Office, and served Secretary-General of the League from 2020 to 2022.
Heardsunu spent most of his career serving in the Tretridian foreign service, and rose to prominence during his tenure while Ambassador to Celanora, during which Tretridio-Celanoran relations improved substantially. Heardsunu was elected to the Witenagemot in 2001. He served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2003-2009, and was instrumental in implementing the foreign policy of Osbeorn Cynricsunu's government.
In his role as Ambassador-at-Large to Novaris from 2017 to 2019, he served as chief advisor to Eoforwine Æthelstansunu regarding Novaran affairs, most visibly with his role in the creation of the League of Novaris. He would concurrently serve as Ambassador-at-Large and as the Permanent Representative to the League of Novaris until his election to the position of LN Secretary-General in 2020
As Secretary-General, Heardsunu lead the League through a series of major international incidents, including the Rodenian invasion of Puntalia and the Correvan crisis. His denunciation of Eoforwine Æthelstansunu at the start of his second term as Secretary-General marked a significant turn in relations between Tretrid and the League.
After stepping down from his position as Secretary-General at the end of his second term in June 2022, Heardsunu was invited to serve as the Chair of the LN's Foreign Office by Thomas Lind, and was named Deputy Secretary-General along with Bob Peare by Shano Tuvria, becoming the first former Secreatry-General to serve as Deputy, as well as being one of the first Deputies to serve alongside another Deputy.
Early life and education[edit | edit source | hide | hide all]
Heardsunu was born on December 4, 1961, and grew up in Sigested.
He attended the University of Cynebury from 1980 to 1984, where he majored in international relations. While he scored high-marks, people around him later recalled that he was "a heavy partier" who "played as hard as he worked." Heardsunu would later express his "regrets" about the way he acted as a university student, stating that "that past version of [him] almost seems like a completely different person." Heardsunu also competed on the University of Cynebury's varsity skeet shooting team. He graduated with a BA magna cum laude in June 1984.
Early career[edit | edit source | hide]
Heardsunu joined the Royal Diplomatic Service immediately after graduating in 1984 and initially served as an attaché to the Embassy of Tretrid, Solevia, in Solevera. Upon his recommendation to the position by the Tretridian Ambassador to Solevera, in 1990, Heardsunu was appointed as Consul of the Tretridian consulate in Cilèmonte, Celanora.
Ambassador to Celanora[edit | edit source | hide]
The Ambassador-at-Large to Novaris submitted his intent to retire from the Royal Diplomatic Service in late 1996, leading Prime Minister Ecgswið Eohbeornsdohter to appoint the Ambassador to Celanora to fulfill the position. The Ambassador to Celanora recommended Heardsunu to the position of Ambassador, noting that his "due diligence in effecting Tretridian foreign policy in his consular assignment" made him an "exemplary" candidate for the assignment. Eohbeornsdohter chose to follow the recommendation and nominated Heardsunu to be the next Ambassador to Celanora, and he was confirmed by the Witenagemot on April 26, 1996. He delivered his letter of credence to the three Celanoran Triarchs on May 10, and took office upon the acceptance of his diplomatic credentials.
